    21.1.1: Student Notebook Assignment

You have one of two options for completing the Chapter Note Taking Guide:

    1. Print the Student Notebook Assignment from the textbook. This will result in a PDF of the Note Taking Guide that you can use for answering the questions. You will need to answer the questions on another document like Word or Google Docs.
    2. Download the attached Word document of the Student Note Taking Guide for Chapter 21 to use it to answer questions for all the lessons in Chapter 21. Answer the questions on the Word document.

Read only the part listed below. Take notes and answer questions as described. Each note taking instruction should be done in your own words, in 1-2 sentences or bullet points, or unless otherwise stated.

    • Why does the central nervous system lack lymphatic capillaries?
    • Describe the structure of lymphatic capillaries. Contrast it with the structure of blood capillaries.
    • Explain the importance of the structure of the lymphatic capillaries and how it relates to their function.
    • What happens to the flow of lymph when blood pressure increases?
    • Define chyle and explain its importance.
    • Describe the structure of lymphatic vessels. Compare them to veins and arteries.
    • Explain the role of lymphatic trunks. Describe what drains into each.
    • Describe the flow of lymph back into the blood system.
    • Explain the roles of the three phases of the immune system.
    • Explain the role of the following types of immune cells:
      • Phagocytic cells
      • Lymphocytes
      • Granulocytes
    • Describe the function of each type of lymphatic cell:
      • B cells
      • T cells
      • Plasma cells
      • Natural Killer Cells
    • Describe the process of lymphoid cell development, including the role of the bone marrow and the thymus.
    • Describe the location and structure of the thymus.
    • Explain the difference between primary and secondary lymphoid organs and give examples of each.
    • Describe the structure of a lymph node and explain its general function.
    • Why are lymph nodes a common site for cancer to metastasize?
    • Describe the general role and structure of the spleen.
    • Describe the general location, structure, and function of lymphoid nodules.
