1.4: Electrical Activity of the Cell Membrane

A charge exists at the membrane surface due to the difference in the distribution of ions between the intracellular and extracellular compartments. This distinct charge variation enables the generation of electrical signals, including action potentials in specific cell types such as neurons and muscle fibers. To establish a transmembrane potential and trigger an action potential, various channels and specialized ion pumps requiring energy play a crucial role.
