    10.1: Introduction

    Introduction

The way people listen to audio has dramatically evolved over the past few decades. Once dominated by vinyl records, cassette tapes, and CDs, audio distribution has shifted to digital files, downloadable music, and now streaming over the internet. The modern listener may never own a physical album or even a digital file — they simply subscribe to a service and press play. Understanding how audio travels over the internet, the formats used, the trade-offs between quality and file size, and the cultural implications of streaming is essential to understanding the future of sound.

This chapter explores file formats, streaming technology, podcasting, subscription platforms, what has happened to traditional radio, and where audio consumption is heading next. Since this chapter is very technical, it is being presented in an easy to read bulleted format. This format will allow for future technologies to be added as needed.
