Streaming Audio
Streaming is the continuous transmission of audio over a network without requiring the user to fully download the file before listening.
How Streaming Works
-
A server stores audio files.
-
When a listener presses play, compressed chunks of the audio are sent over the internet.
-
The user’s device buffers several seconds of audio ahead of playback.
-
Playback begins while data continues to stream in real-time.
Advantages of Streaming
-
No need to store large files.
-
Immediate playback.
-
Access to large libraries of content.
Disadvantages
-
Requires a stable internet connection.
-
Sound quality varies depending on compression.
-
Rights can be revoked; you don’t own the music.
Streaming can be on-demand (Spotify, Apple Music) or live (internet radio stations, Twitch, live podcast recordings).
