Individual Classroom Activity (5 Minutes): Identity Mapping and Group Experiences
Activity Purpose
This brief reflection activity helps students examine how social identities influence individual experiences, group interactions, and perceptions of inclusion, privilege, and belonging.
Activity Instructions (5 Minutes)
Step 1: Individual Identity Reflection (3 minutes)
Students will privately reflect on the following questions:
- What social identities (e.g., culture, profession, age, gender, nationality, education, interests, or other meaningful identities) influence how you see yourself within groups?
- Which identities are most visible to others, and which may be less visible?
- How might your identities influence your experiences, communication style, or participation in group settings?
Step 2: Group Dynamics Connection (2 minutes)
Students will respond to the following prompt:
“How can awareness of different social identities help groups create stronger communication, collaboration, and inclusion?”
Students may share general insights with the class without disclosing personal information they prefer to keep private.
Reflection Outcome
Students should recognize that group members bring diverse identities and experiences that influence perspectives, behaviors, and interactions. Understanding social identity and intersectionality can help groups reduce assumptions, improve inclusion, and strengthen collaboration.
