10.2: Leadership and Shared Power in Groups - Classroom Activity

Leadership and Shared Power in Groups - Classroom Activity

“Who Has the Voice? Exploring Leadership and Power in Groups”

    Time: 10 minutes
    Purpose:

This activity helps learners examine different leadership approaches, explore how power is distributed within groups, and identify strategies for creating more inclusive and collaborative group environments.

    Learning Outcomes

By the end of this activity, learners will be able to:

    1. Identify different leadership styles and their impact on group dynamics.
    2. Analyze how power and decision-making influence participation in groups.
    3. Evaluate the benefits of transformational and collaborative leadership approaches.
    4. Develop strategies for promoting inclusive and equitable group leadership.

    Activity Instructions

Step 1: Leadership Scenario Discussion (3 minutes)

Divide students into small groups (3–5 members) and provide the following scenario:

    Scenario: “The Unequal Team Meeting”

A project team is preparing a major presentation. The team leader makes most decisions, assigns tasks without discussion, and rarely asks for input from quieter members. Two team members have valuable ideas but do not share them because they feel their perspectives are not being considered. Other members complete assigned tasks but feel disconnected from the overall project goals.

    Discussion Questions:

    • What leadership style is being demonstrated?
    • How does the current leadership approach affect group participation?
    • Who has power in this situation, and who does not?

Step 2: Redesign the Leadership Approach (4 minutes)

Groups redesign the scenario using a shared-power leadership model.

    Discuss:

    • How could the leader involve more voices in decision-making?
    • What responsibilities could be shared among group members?
    • What practices would help create a more inclusive environment?

Groups identify three changes they would make, such as:

    • Rotating leadership responsibilities
    • Creating opportunities for all members to contribute
    • Establishing shared group goals and expectations
    • Encouraging feedback and open communication

Step 3: Class Reflection and Debrief (3 minutes)

Groups share one leadership challenge and one recommended solution.

    Instructor discussion prompts:

    • How is collaborative leadership different from traditional leadership?
    • When might shared leadership improve group effectiveness?
    • How can leaders ensure that power is distributed equitably?
