    13: Romanesque

Romanesque literally means "in the Roman tradition." It is a derogatory term since the buildings of this time were not built as well as those built by the Ancient Romans. The formula for concrete was lost and the height of the buildings relied on the thick walls and columns. This is a transitional time in art that shows development in both visual art and architecture. The churches are massive in size and scale and beginning to develop toward the ultimate style expressed in the Gothic Period.
