    5: Mechatronic System Component- Actuators
    Learning Objectives
    1. Describe various mechatronic actuation systems and their applications such as electromagnetic and electrohydraulic valve actuators. Understand operational principles of both linear and rotational DC motors.
    2. Derive the torque and back EMF (electromotive force) coefficients from the DC-motor modeling contents in Chapter 2. Provide DC-motor output torque ripple as a function of a number of rotor winding poles. Define stall torque and no-load speed as a function of input armature voltage.
    3. Introduce the low/high side and H-bridge DC-motor drive circuits. Provide the benefit of using the PWM (pulse-width-modulation) to drive the DC motor with significantly reduced drive power consumption (waste).
    4. Describe the discrete electromagnetic linear actuation system with an example of an internal combustion engine camless valve actuation system.
    5. Introduce the discrete electrohydraulic linear actuation system with an example of an internal combustion engine camless valve actuation system.
    6. Provide the working principle of permanent magnetic synchronous motor (PMSM), its drive (inverter) circuit, and vector control of PMSM.

This chapter provides an introduction to actuators used in mechatronic systems, including DC motors and their drive circuits, electromagnetic and electrohydraulic valve actuators, and permanent magnetic synchronous motors.
