    4.2: Why Two-Dimensional Arrays Matter

So far, many of the arrays we have used were one-dimensional arrays, or vectors. A row vector has one row, and a column vector has one column. But in real problems, data is often organized in rows and columns. That is where two-dimensional arrays become very useful.

A two-dimensional array has rows and columns. In mathematics and engineering, a two-dimensional numerical array is usually called a matrix. MATLAB works especially well with matrices, which is one reason MATLAB is so popular in engineering, physics, data analysis, and scientific computing.

Think about the kinds of data you might store in rows and columns: test scores for students, temperatures measured at different times, spring forces and spring constants, sensor readings from different locations, or results from repeated experiments. A matrix gives us a clean way to organize this information.

    Key Idea

A 2D array stores data in rows and columns. In MATLAB, the first index is the row number and the second index is the column number.
