About this work
The famous engraver Lucas van Leyden did not see Emperor Maximilian in the flesh, but made this print after the woodcut by Albrecht Dürer, which hangs alongside it. It bespeaks the great demand for images of famous rulers. The technique he used, a combination of etching and engraving, makes it possible to work in minute detail.
