In this interview from the American Experience archives, author Isabel Allende reflects on her historical research for her novel “Daughter of Fortune” and the complex history of the California Gold Rush. Allende offers a deeply personal perspective on the dynamic creation of San Francisco, the overlooked contributions and struggles of early international miners from Chile, Mexico, and China, and the diverse experiences of women, dreamers, and fortune seekers during a time of extreme transformation.

Allende spoke to filmmaker Randall MacLowry on April 22, 2005. This interview was conducted for our 2006 documentary THE GOLD RUSH and is being published as part of our series spotlighting remarkable archival conversations with historians, journalists, eyewitnesses, and other primary sources whose insights deepen our understanding of the past.
