줄거리 : 혜옥(조미령)은 의사인 남편 정학수(이민)와 함께 행복하게 살고 있는 중산층 여성이다. 좀처럼 아기가 생기지 않는다는 점 외에는 아무런 걱정도 없는 그녀의 집에 어느 날 남편이 아들이라 주장하는 신오(안성기)가 찾아온다. 신오는 7년 전 전쟁 중 남편 정학수와 하룻밤을 보낸 여인 계순(이경희)의 아이였다. 계순은 아무도 몰래 아이를 낳고 길러 왔지만 중병에 걸려 죽게 되자 어쩔 수 없이 아버지에게 아이를 맡기게 된 것이다. 남편이 출장 간 동안 남편의 자식을 맡게 된 혜옥은 배신감을 느낀다. 그녀는 아이를 고아원에 맡기려 하지만 완강히 거부하는 아이를 보며 결국 다시 집으로 데리고 돌아온다. 혜옥은 신오와 함께 지내는 사이 점점 모성애를 느끼게 되고 신오 역시 그녀를 따르게 된다. 출장에서 돌아온 남편은 집을 나가려는 아내에게 피난길에 단 둘이 남겨진 상황에서 어쩔 수 없는 일이었다며 용서를 구한다. 한편 날마다 기찻길에 나가 엄마를 기다리던 신오는 기차를 쫓아가다 기찻길에서 넘어진다. 차마 신오를 떠나지 못하고 집 근처를 배회하던 엄마는 넘어진 신오를 구하고 대신 죽음을 맞게 된다. 신오를 찾아 밖으로 나온 혜옥과 학수는 엄마의 시체 옆에서 울고 있는 신오를 발견하게 되고 혜옥은 신오를 꼭 안아준다.

SYNOPSIS : Hye-ok (Jo Mi-ryeong), a middle class woman, lives happily with her husband, Jeong Hak-su (Lee Min), a doctor. She has no worries save that she has no children. One day, a boy named Sin-o (Ahn Seong-gi) visits her and alleges that he is a son of her husband. The boy's mother is Gye-sun (Lee Gyeong-hee) who spent one night with her husband seven years ago during the war. Gye-sun gave birth to the boy and has raised him in secret, but now that she is due to die of a serious illness, she has no choice but to send him to his father. Hye-ok feels betrayed by her husband. While her husband is away on a business trip, she decides to deal with the boy. She tries to send him off to an orphanage, but he strongly opposes it and she brings him with her. While Hye-ok lives with him, she feels maternal affection for him, and Sin-o becomes fond of her, too. Returning home from a business trip, her husband begs forgiveness from his wife, who is about to leave, saying that on his way to seek refuge it was…
