줄거리 : 과거 조선조 말 한때 세도가로 행세했던 집안에 데릴사위로 들어온 공 주사(최남현)는 평생 아내(황정순)에게 큰 소리 한번 못쳐본 공처가다. 그런 아버지 밑에서 자란 아들 치산(허장강) 또한 아내(조미령)에게 꼭 쥐어산다. 공 주사의 아내는 손자 진호(신성일)와 결혼한 손자 며느리(고은아)에게 아내가 남편을 길들여 쥐고 사는 집안 내력을 가르치고, 손자 며느리 역시 시어머니와 시할머니 편에 선다. 집안의 분위기가 불만스러운 치산은 회사 건물 다방의 강 마담과 바람을 피운다. 한편 진호는 결혼 전부터 그를 좋아해온 직장 동료 미스 김의 구애를 받는다. 강 마담과 미스 김의 존재를 알게 된 치산과 진호의 아내들은 남편과 싸우고, 남편들은 집을 나가 여관방을 잡는다. 몰래 화해한 진호 부부는 아버지와 어머니, 할머니와 할아버지를 화해시키려고 한다. 삼대가 함께 모인 자리에서 공 주사의 아내는 그동안 아들과 손자 내외를 분가시키기 위한 돈을 모아왔다는 사실을 알리며, 치산과 진호 부부에게 분가를 약속한다.
