Bij het uitbreken van de oorlog weet Rudi Hemmes (1923) één ding zeker: hij moet naar Engeland om van daaruit de Duitsers te verdrijven uit Nederland. Samen met zijn vriend Bob lukt het hem eind '43 in Engeland te komen. Daar worden ze ingelijfd bij de Prinses Irene Brigade. De 1.100 man tellende brigade maakt de overtocht naar Normandië in augustus '44, achter de geallieerden aan. Via België arriveren ze in Zuid-Nederland, waar ze op 24 oktober Tilburg bevrijden, samen met een Schotse brigade. Het monument op het Stadhuisplein herinnert hieraan.
