About
Drawing on U.S. military newspapers, comics, posters, and visual materials from the Korean War era, this lecture, “From Allegory to Archive: Mobility, Familiarity, and U.S. Military Media in Korea,” by Swann Fellow Hyun Kong, a PhD candidate in Comparative Literature and Asian Studies at Pennsylvania State University, reflects on how archival research can illuminate everyday military life and media practices. Rather than treating the U.S. military as a unified political symbol, the talk considers how mobility between Korea and Japan shaped patterns of representation, leisure, and familiarity in military media. By examining recurring visual motifs and figures that accompanied soldiers’ daily routines, the lecture offers a methodological reflection on how archives organize meaning through repetition, circulation, and context, as well as on what becomes visible or remains indistinct within historical records.
