About

Isabel Aretz (1909–2005) was an ethnomusicologist and composer born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A central figure in the development of ethnomusicology in the Americas, she conducted extensive fieldwork in Latin America, particularly in Argentina and Venezuela.

In the 1940s, Aretz recorded traditional music in Northwest Argentina. In the 1950s, she deposited some of these field recordings in what are now the collections of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

This video concert features Argentine singer and composer Nadia Larcher, who reinterprets three recordings from Aretz’s archival collections (“Munanquichú/Jacu Jacu/Ya Me Voy,” “De Lejas Tierras,” and “Baguala Cafayateña”) alongside two original songs (“Andalgalá” and “Música Hermana”). Throughout the performance, Larcher recites excerpts from interviews with Aretz, in which the ethnomusicologist reflects on her life and work.

Musician Manu Sija accompanies Larcher on guitar, violin, and other instruments. Both artists are natives of Northwest Argentina, from the provinces of Catamarca and Tucumán, respectively.

The concert celebrates Women’s History Month, the 50th anniversary of the American Folklife Center, and is part of the Homegrown Concert Series.
