About
Gerard (Gerry) Rozea, an engineer for Lucent Technologies who specialized in installing complex phone systems for large offices, was working from his Pennsylvania home on 9/11 and, while talking with co-workers at the phone company’s central office on Vesey Street (adjacent to the WTC), he saw the planes hit the Towers on his TV. Knowing his expertise would be needed -- and having worked installing equipment at WTC -- he headed to Manhattan the following day. He describes being allowed across a deserted George Washington Bridge by the National Guard, driving down the West Side Highway with a police escort, and being onsite when Building 5 fell. Enveloped by dust (which caused subsequent health issues) and surrounded by damaged buildings, he and his co-workers scrambled to get main switch systems up and running, which they did by September 18th.
