About
William "Bill" Gardner was a corrections officer in Nassau County. He responded to the World Trade Center site and was immediately assigned to provide security at an FDNY firehouse, Rescue 1, near Ground Zero, which had many casualties. He discusses the grief the firemen and their wives experienced, the feelings of unity post-9/11, and the emotions inspired by his experiences. He later volunteered to work the Bereavement Center at Chelsea Pier where he helped collect DNA and information used to identify victims.
