About

SOUND FILMSTRIP IS AN AT-RISK MEDIA FORMAT. I am the only person on earth preserving American filmstrips. The media format is largely forgotten and very endangered. If you have any American filmstrips, or can rescue any filmstrips from a school, college, business, industry, or elsewhere, please contact me immediately at uncommon.ephemera@gmail.com. Don't know what a filmstrip is? Read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filmstrip

I AM AN INDEPENDENT MEDIA PRESERVATIONIST. If you enjoy my work please consider making a donation toward my operating expenses. Visit https://uncommonephemera.org/donate for links to Patreon, GoFundMe, and more.

COPYRIGHT AND TAKEDOWN REQUESTS. If you hold rights to any material in this archive and wish to discuss its removal, please contact Uncommon Ephemera directly before filing a takedown request with any platform. A takedown removes material immediately and without discussion, and may count as a strike against the Uncommon Ephemera account. Platforms respond to accumulated strikes by removing the account entirely, which would result in the permanent loss of thousands of pieces of historically significant preserved media that have nothing to do with the material in dispute. NOTES

This strangely charming low-budget filmstrip on the life of Czech novelist Franz Kafka was produced by the Peoria, Illinois-based Thomas S. Klise Company. By all accounts the company seemed to have been very small at the time, with just two illustrators responsible for every frame of this entirely hand-drawn filmstrips, and Thomas Klise himself narrating. Despite the current Thomas S. Klise company describing itself as "a woman-owned business" that started out as "the country’s premiere publisher of social justice filmstrips," by all accounts the Klise Company of the 1970s was known for its hand-drawn literature and study-skills titles, all narrated by the gruff, monotone Klise. One American teacher still using Klise filmstrips tells this archivist his students lovingly referred to Klise as "Mr. Mono."

Kafka is catalog number TK 323, created and published in 1972 by The Thomas S. Klise Company. This film was very badly reddened and moderately faded; due to the lack of photographs which might establish a color-restoration reference, color-correction is approximate and best-effort.
