About

Spy Trap : Cold War espionage series (1972-1975)

Only 4 episodes survive from the first series, made in 1972, comprising the opening 4-part serial. Broadcast in colour, they survive today only as a set of black-and-white telerecordings: monochrome film recordings which were made in the 1970s from the original colour videotapes, for sale overseas in countries which had not yet converted to colour.

The only other surviving episodes are all from Series 3, made in 1975, from which all ten episodes survive. The surviving Series 3 recordings are all in colour.

Spy Trap - 1972 (Series 1)

Starring Paul Daneman (Commander Ryan), Julian Glover (Commander Anderson), Kevin Stoney (Mr Trent). With Prentis Hancock.

Episodes 1 to 4: Check Point by Robert Barr

Commander Ryan is an interrogator for M.I.5, the British secret service. In this 4-part opening serial he is asked to debrief a field agent who has just escaped from behind the Iron Curtain bringing out three civilians, including an important scientist. On the face of it, everything about the escape appears to be routine. But Ryan is worried about some discrepancies in the account of events given by the civilians, which imply the scientist, who is about to join a top secret British research project, might be a KGB spy.
