Iowa Department of Transportation Research and Technology Bureau video presentation from the 2009 human factors and roadway safety workshop session titled: Overview of Safety Initiatives in Iowa Tom Welch, Iowa DOT Highway Division Safety Engineer, speaks on contributing factors of driver behavior in fatal crashes and provides new and innovative ideas that contribute to preventing crashes and increased safety; how driver behavior is the major factor in fatal crashes ninety percent of the time. The methods and engineering strategies his office and other states are beginning to employ to provide safer environments that assist distracted drivers are discussed.
