About

I’ve been waiting a long time to put this one up, and now I have an excuse because it’s Garfield’s birthday! This is still my most nostalgic VHS recording. Yes, even among all the Nickelodeon, Doctor Who, and MST3k tapes, I probably watched it more than any of the other ones from my childhood, and always the whole way through (unlike the others where I’d skip past the stuff I wasn’t interested in). On Saturdays, my mom used to take me shopping after my favorite Saturday Morning shows were done, and that usually concluded with Garfield & Friends. However, during these weeks, the schedule of Garfield and the schedule of my mom were in conflict, so she taped 6 weeks of episodes that I would’ve missed being out with her. These episodes are all from the seventh and final season and were not included in the syndication package, which means I got to rewatch episodes that others couldn’t until the DVDs came out (however, there was one small snag, as you will see…). Also, at this point the show was airing in an hour-long block consisting of two episodes, however during these recorded weeks they switched to putting a Garfield TV special in the second half. The specials for these weeks were Garfield Goes Hollywood, Here Comes Garfield, Garfield’s Feline Fantasies, and Garfield In Paradise. Yes, in that order. Here Comes Garfield really doesn’t gel with the show in art style or tone, but there’s even more jarring tonal whiplash with some of the promos in these breaks. Anyway, no, I don’t know or remember what other specials were shown in the subsequent final weeks of the show.

But enough talk. Ladies and gentlemen, Garfield and Friends…’s commercial breaks!

1. CBS ID (partial) 2. A message from Little League Baseball and The Gatorade Company (with Michael Jordan) 3. Northern Exposure promo 4. Garfield & Friends rap opening theme with CC bug, CBS screen bug, CBS Stereosound banner… and strangely silent Garfield (this is the only time I’ll subject you to the full thing, I promise. Also, I checked the DVD version of the episode and Garfield’s quip is “The funniest show on TV that doesn’t have a 1-800 number to buy cheap junk”. I don’t know why it was muted on broadcast. Error or concern about mentioning 1-800 numbers for some reason?) 5. Felix the Cat “Garfield & Friends will return” bumper 6. Lion King Talking Simba 7. McDonald’s Happy Meal Workshop/Magic School Bus Happy Meal 8. Dr. Barbie 9. Felix The Cat “And now back to Garfield & Friends” bumper 10. Felix the Cat “Garfield & Friends will return” bumper 11. Garfield & Friends (The Guy Of Her Dreams) interrupted by CBS News Special Report (and I never got to see the full cartoon until the DVD came out 11 years later… maybe this is an immature response, but couldn’t this have waited until AFTER the children’s shows? How many adults did they think would be watching? Did only my time zone get the interruption here or did every kid in America have to wait to see the rest of this? asdfghjkl;’) 50. CBS Schoolbreak Special: The Writing On The Wall promo (it’s an important topic but I’m not sure this was the right show to promote this during… considering it went right over my head except as a depressing thing to tune out on repeat viewing. I understand it now but I still wonder why they advertised it during Garfield & Friends and not a less comedic show for a slightly older audience) 58.
