Emotional Intelligence with Daniel Goleman

(PBS Home Video, 1999)

Running Time: 70 Minutes

Acclaimed clinical psychologist Dr. Daniel Goleman introduces his ground-breaking discoveries about the emotional mind. Based on his best-selling book, EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, the program focuses on emotion as another measure of intelligence, redefining what it means to be “smart.” “EQ” is Goleman’s shorthand for emotional intelligence.

Taped before a studio audience, the program offers tools that people can use to improve their health, family life and professional prospects. Goleman refutes the belief that IQ (intelligence quotient) alone determines destiny. According to Goleman’s research people who are emotionally intelligent tend to have more success in their lives as parents and partners, and in their chosen field of employment, because they understand and master the five basic emotional competencies: self-awareness, managing emotions, motivation, empathy and social skills.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE contains an optimistic, pragmatic message––unlike IQ, which is basically unchanged from childhood onward, EQ can be learned. Regardless of age, Goleman asserts, individuals can learn how to strengthen and deepen their relationship with themselves and others.
