About

(c)1997

DVD Transfer 90 is a rip from April 1997 VHS recordings of AMC's airing of the 1953 film "The Robe" (based on the 1942 Lloyd C. Douglas novel of the same name and starred Richard Burton, Jean Simmons, Victor Mature, Michael Rennie, Richard Boone, Dean Jagger, Jeff Morrow and Jay Robinson; this film - the first to be produced in the CinemaScope format - was directed by Henry Koster, had its screenplay done by Gina Kaus, Philip Dunne and Albert Mautz {the last of whom was uncredited due to being part of the Hollywood 10 who had been blacklisted under suspicion of being members of the Communist Party} and made $36 million on a budget of just over $4 million) and its 1954 sequel "Demetrius and the Gladiators" (Victor Mature, Jay Robinson and Michael Rennie return; joined this time by Debra Paget; Susan Hayward; William Marshall along with early roles for both Ernest Borgnine and Anne Bancroft; with a then-unknown Julie Newmar briefly appearing in a background role. Delmer Daves moves into the director's chair this time while Philip Dunne wrote this screenplay solo. The sequel did equally well at the box office, taking in $26 million on a budget of just under $2 million).

Both films are hosted by Nick Clooney (father of then-"ER" star George, brother of singer Rosemary and a former local news anchor primarily in Cincinnati and Los Angeles)

Following is the premiere of the TNT Bible Collection series focused on King David. Titled simply "David". this 2-part movie starred Nathaniel Parker, Jonathan Pryce, Leonard Nimoy, Sheryl Lee, Ben Daniels and Franco Nero. Part 1 covers the early years of David through the adultery with Bathsheba and subsequent murder of her husband Uriah. Part 2 picks up from there but runs about 10 minutes before the tape ran out.
