About
DVD Transfer 146 contains a mix of Pluto TV recordings from June 2023 along with the contents of an eBay purchase that is the oldest VHS tape I've acquired yet, a recording of contents taped in Chicago sometime in October 1985.
This upload is also my 400th overall upload.
CONTENTS
1. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (the 1939 film was this particular evening's Weekend Theater for Chicago independent station {and at that time, superstation} WGN-TV 9 {now the Windy City's CW affiliate, what had been the superstation feed was later converted to regular cable network WGN America before ultimately being retooled into NewsNation}. This film {the 2nd of 14 films featuring the famed detective as portrayed by Basil Rathbone - and the last released by 20th Century Fox, as all of the remaining films in that series were released by Universal and set in the then-present day [vs. the first two films being set in the Victorian period matching the original Arthur Conan Doyle books]} also starred Nigel Bruce {as Dr. Watson}, George Zucco as Professor Moriarty alongside Alan Marshal as Jerrold Hunter and Ida Lupino as Ann Brandon {an early role for Lupino, who later gained fame as one of the first prominent female directors})
2. Minnie the Moocher and Many, Many More (documentary {presumably PBS} featuring jazz great Cab Calloway returning to Harlem in this Manny Pittson production featuring Calloway revisiting Harlem. In addition to Calloway, other jazz greats of the Harlem Renaissance era highlighted include: Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and Lena Horne among others)
3. Mr. Scoutmaster (WGN movie airing of the 1953 film starring Clifton Webb, Frances Dee, Edmund Glenn and George Winslow alongside two actors in smaller roles with connections to "It's a Wonderful Life" {Amanda Randolph, whose sister Lillian played the maid Annie in the 1946 Christmas classic, and Jimmy Hawkins, who played Tommy Bailey, the youngest of the children of George and Mary Bailey - and who is one of the film's few surviving cast members}; partial recording {appears to have been taped over by the Minnie the Moocher documentary, then the tape ran out})
4. Family Feud (Spongberg vs. Charlebois {Richard Dawson era - FFD-82 #1470}; one of two episodes taped from Pluto TV's recently-launched Family Feud Classic channel featuring episodes from the Richard Dawson and Ray Combs eras. Original airdate: March 22, 1982 {an ABC daytime episode}. The Spongberg family - the defending champions - end up winning the match but pick up only $665 due to a poor showing in the 2nd half of Fast Money)
5. Star Trek: The Original Series (The Menagerie: Part 2 {original Star Trek's sole 2-parter, which like Part 1 uses footage from the unsold 1964 pilot titled "The Cage" - with Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike - who by the time of the events of the series was badly disfigured and disabled, Majel Barrett [credited as M. Leigh Hudec; later cast as Nurse Chapel] as a character simply named Number One [who served in a role similar to Spock in the series proper, while Leonard Nimoy's version of Spock in "The Cage" is far different than the series version, John Hoyt as Dr. Philip Boyce and Susan Oliver as Vina [who the Talosians were able to make appear in various forms, most notably as a green-skinned woman whose image often appeared in the closing credits]. Guest stars appearing in the framing story of Spock's court martial included Malachi Thorne as Commodore Jose Mendez [Thorne voiced one of the Keepers in the pilot] and Julie Parrish as Lt. Piper} Pluto TV recording {Part 1 was recorded by my parents and uploaded as part of DVD Transfer 75})
6. Rescue 911 (featured stories include the April 22, 1991 rescue of a woman named Kathy Watson who was rear-ended by a relative named Linda near Kathy's house and then trapped in her car as it caught on fire; followed by a look at the Children's National Medical Center {now simply Children's National Hospital} in Washington, a medical center specially designed to treat children who suffered traumatic injuries)
7. Family Feud (Erdmann vs. Nelson; Ray Combs era. Also recorded from Family Feud Classic channel. Original airdate: September 2, 1988 {CBS Daytime} - note Combs poking fun at his short stature by walking behind the Nelsons. The Nelsons went on to dethrone the Erdmanns and win $5,435 in Fast Money)
