About

The Black Cauldron is a 1985 American animated film of adventure and fantasy, directed by Ted Berman and Richard Rich for Walt Disney Pictures , with a script based on the first two books in the Chronicles of Prydain series, by Lloyd Alexander, which were inspired by the Welsh mythology.

This 25th film from Disney Studios is set in the mythical land of Prydain during the Dark Ages. The animation tells the story of a mystical magical cauldron desired by the feared Horned King (in Brazil: Rei de Horns ; in Portugal: Rei Chifres ) who hopes, once he takes possession of it, to dominate the world with the help of the supernatural powers that come from the cauldron. However, a young man called Taran, accompanied by Princess Eilonwy, a creature called Gurgi, her little pig Hen Wen and the friendly Mr. Flores Flame try to stop the villain from reaching the infamous cauldron.

The film is directed by Ted Berman and Richard Rich, who previously directed the 1981 film The Fox and the Hound (also from Disney). Among its original cast are Grant Bardsley, Susan Sheridan, Freddie Jones, Nigel Hawthorne, John Byner and John Hurt who lent their voices to the characters. It was the first Disney animated film to receive a PG rating from the MPAA and also the studio's first to make use of computer-generated imagery (CGI).

The animation was released in North American cinemas on July 24 , 1985. In Brazil, the film arrived on September 19 of the same year and in Portugal it only arrived on March 18, 1986. At a cost of US$ 25 million (although one of the film's producers claims that the film cost more than US$ 40 million), the film did not achieve a satisfactory return at the box office, grossing just a little more than US$ 21 million in cinemas around the world.
