About
From a Umatic dub of a 2" quad tape, here's another edition of Today in Chicago with Norman Mark on WMAQ Channel 5, with the guests skating legend Peggy Fleming (in connection with her gig as part of Ice Follies at Chicago Stadium through Sunday, November 26th) and Bonnie Jean, skating director for the Chicago Park District (who has a program for the blind, mentally handicapped and hearing impaired) and former "Holiday on Ice" skater. Commercials, promos, PSA's, news update and station ID's not included.
Includes:
CG slate (prod. #P 1641) indicating Segment 1
Opening titles (with "We All Remember Wes" theme music), followed by Norman starting off with an observation of children and kitchen doors in hot vs. cold weather, and a history lesson on Chicago in the 1830's-1840's, before previewing his guests and signaling for news break with Roberta Baskin (alas, neither she nor her update are seen here)
"News Next...." bumper
'Segment 2' slate
Norman introduces his guests, starting off with Peggy recounting her early career (dating to 1959), her 1968 Gold Medal at the Grenoble Olympics juxtaposed with that year's unrest, and her life and career as of this show (skating 12 weeks and tending to her family the other 40), then Bonnie speaks of her brush with skating ("I quit three times") and teaching, and taking a society editor's job at a local newspaper, before Norman interrupts for a break.
"More to come...." bumper (music: "We All Remember Wes")
Segment 3 starts off with film of Peggy showing off her skating acumen at Ice Follies, then Bonnie speaks about a kid (7 going on 8, as of this show) named Robbie whom she'd met at the McFetridge Sports Center where she's based, and then Peggy recalls how she met him. The issue of Bonnie's program for the blind, handicapped and hearing impaired comes up, then each discusses the importance of why they should become interested in skating. Norman then signals for the next break.
(music during the skating film is tagged as being called "Quiet Night")
"Stay tuned for more...." bumper (same music)
