About
A PBS wine education program produced by South Carolina ETV, hosted by Kim Caffrey and underwritten by the Wine Institute, Scheffelin and Somerset, and several trade associations. The tape contains two full episodes. The first covers wine intimidation and snobbery, how to hold and swirl a glass, how grapes become wine (fermentation, tannins, oak aging, sulfites, racking), how to taste and smell using the UC Davis aroma wheel, Old World versus New World labeling, corked wine identification, storing leftover bottles, and restaurant wine etiquette.
The second episode focuses on the wine regions of northern coastal California. It covers the distinction between Napa and Sonoma microclimates and sub-AVAs, and profiles the Gallo family (Matt and Gina, grandchildren of Julio and Ernest who came to Sonoma in the 1930s). A food and wine pairing segment features Master of Wine Tim Hanai, who uses a lemon-versus-teriyaki experiment on salmon to demonstrate how seasoning changes a wine's apparent character. The tape closes at a Mendocino winery with a winemaker saying 'this is my cathedral.'
