About
The third tape in Herb Hutchinson's Finally the Basics series, this installment covers harmony, scales, and modes at an intermediate to advanced level, filmed at Hutchinson Sound of Music in Northfield, New Jersey. Hutchinson positions this as territory rarely covered in depth by other instructional videos. The tape begins with the musical alphabet as the foundation for all note, chord, scale, and mode names, then builds the diatonic system, explaining how seven scale tones organize into a coherent framework. The major scale is constructed from two tetrachords, groups of four tones that share a specific interval pattern.
The seven modes are explained by starting the same tonal material on each successive scale degree: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian. The tape covers basic and extended harmony, triads, the pentatonic scale and its relationship to the major scale, relative minor (Aeolian mode), and harmonic and melodic minor. Hutchinson closes encouraging repeated listening alongside the companion book Finally the Basics for Harmony, Scales, and Modes. The tape runs approximately one hour and 52 minutes.
