About
The second tape in Herb Hutchinson's Finally the Basics series, covering the root of a chord, rhythm notation, and bar chords. Recorded at Hutchinson Sound of Music in Northfield, New Jersey, the tape opens by revisiting the four chords from Volume 1 (C major, A minor, D minor, G7) to explain the root, the note that names the chord, and how emphasizing it on the first beat while strumming the remaining tones creates movement and character in the playing.
The rhythm section introduces whole, half, quarter, and eighth note notation, explains the down-up strumming pattern for eighth notes (first eighth always a downstroke, second always an upstroke), and demonstrates how to eliminate strokes while keeping arm motion going for syncopated contemporary rhythms. The bar chord section teaches three shapes: the E form (root on the sixth string), the A form (root on the fifth string), and the D form (root on the fourth string). A three-rule system organizes the entire approach: find the root, place the bar at that fret, form the chord. All four chord qualities are demonstrated in each shape. The tape runs approximately one hour and 40 minutes.
