About
A children's educational video set in a library, following three students, Maya, Casey, and Amanda, as they work on a Lewis and Clark research project with the help of librarian Ms. McGuire and a librarian-in-training. The program teaches a three-step research framework called FSE: Focus, Strategize, Evaluate. Three categories of search tools are covered in order: subscription databases including SIRS Discover, Encyclopedia Britannica Online, and Grolier Online; subject directories including Yahooligans.com and Kids' Click; and search engines including Google.
Boolean search strategies are explained with examples: AND to narrow, OR to broaden with synonyms, NOT to exclude. The program covers subject search, keyword search, and phrase search using quotation marks. Website evaluation uses five criteria: up-to-date, useful, readable, accurate, and balanced. Domain extensions get their own segment, explaining .com as commercial, .org as nonprofit, .gov as reliable government, and .edu as educational. A fictional inaccurate website, "Jim's Really Great Lewis and Clark Page," is used to demonstrate the importance of checking sources after it wrongly names John Adams as president during the expedition instead of Thomas Jefferson. The tape closes with plagiarism, citation, and Acceptable Use Policy.
