About
Helicopter Pilot Dave and Helicopter Pilot Becky get assigned to their first real mission at US Coast Guard Station San Diego: a mayday call from a vessel called the Gold Distractor, 30 miles west of San Diego near San Clemente Island. The framing story runs through the tape as they argue about snacks, bathroom breaks, and the prospect of finding gold. The Sikorsky HH-60 rescue helicopter is the program's starting point -- hoist with 250 feet of cable and 600-pound capacity, GPS navigation, jet turbine engine, tail rotor, and flotation bags -- followed by a history of helicopter development from Leonardo da Vinci's concept through the pogo plane, flying platform, and V-22 Osprey.
At US Marine Corps Station Tustin, which houses the two largest unsupported wooden structures in the world (blimp hangars from after World War II), Captain Biggs introduces the CH-53 Super Sea Stallion, Captain Lou Villarol and the CH-46 Sea Knight tandem-rotor helicopter with spy harness rappelling, Captain Moran and the Huey utility helicopter, and Captain Bob Darling and the AH-1 Cobra gunship with its 20mm cannon and helmet-linked targeting camera. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at Long Beach Airport adds the Bell 206 Long Ranger 2, an AS-350 with searchlight and forward-looking infrared, and the 1959-built Sikorsky S-58 Turbine flown by Deputy Roger Peterson. The rescue concludes when the diver is found -- the golden treasure turns out to be the name of the ship. Commander Mike Saylor closes with a message urging kids to stay in school and stay off drugs.
