About
This tape collects animated adaptations of six Maurice Sendak works: "Alligators All Around," "Pierre," "One Was Johnny," "Chicken Soup with Rice," "Where the Wild Things Are," and "In the Night Kitchen." Each runs only a few minutes and captures the spare, slightly odd quality of Sendak's illustrations in motion. The collection is well suited to repeated viewing, the kind of thing a child returns to again and again.
A substantial interview segment with Sendak follows the animations. He discusses the origins of Wild Things, originally titled "Wild Horses" because he couldn't draw horses, and explains that the monsters were modeled on his aunts and uncles. He talks about "In the Night Kitchen" as a more adult work influenced by Windsor McKay and the 1970 World's Fair, and reflects on his complicated relationship with being read to as a child and with books he genuinely disliked.
