About

Narrated by Meryl Streep with music by Sting, this 1995 IMAX film directed by Greg MacGillivray argues that the world's oceans form a single interconnected system and that understanding this is essential to protecting them. The film visits Cape Disappointment, Oregon (Coast Guard surf rescue training), Monterey Bay (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute ROV dives to 1,500 feet led by oceanographer Bruce Robison), and Bar Harbor, Maine (Dr. Steven Katona's humpback whale identification research using fluke patterns). A siphonophore roughly half the length of a football field appears during the deep-sea sequence.

The Palau Islands anchor the film's final section: Francis Toribiong describes traditional fishing practices, Jellyfish Lake hosts one million non-stinging jellyfish studied by Laura Martin over five years, and the reef demonstrates the interdependence of the world ocean's health. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject and is now in the IMAX Hall of Fame. The tape includes a promotional segment before the main feature.
