About
Spectacular Video of Las Vegas Implosions documents four casino implosions that took place in Las Vegas, Nevada between 1993 and 1996. The program opens with a Webster's Dictionary definition of implosion, then traces the pattern of Las Vegas redevelopment in which smaller, aging hotel-casinos were demolished by controlled explosive implosion to make way for larger luxury properties. The four implosions covered are the Dunes (October 27, 1993, detonated with a pirate cannon shot), the Landmark Hotel Casino (built between 1959 and 1963, the Howard Hughes landmark), the Sands, and the Hacienda (New Year's Eve, coming down in 40 seconds amid fireworks and fanfare).
The program provides historical context for each property before its demolition sequence, noting the Dunes opened in spring 1955 and added the 24-story Diamond of the Dunes tower during the Hughes-era expansion. Each demolition sequence is presented with footage of the building before and during collapse. The Hacienda implosion closes the tape with New Year's Eve celebrations and repeated crowd responses. The program runs approximately 31 minutes.
