About
Self-Discipline and Emotional Control is a live seminar program featuring Dr. Tom Miller, developed over twenty years and produced by ETC with CareerTrack. Volume 1 introduces the core premise of the system: Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, or REBT, developed by psychologist Albert Ellis in the mid-1950s. Through three illustrative stories involving flowers, a stomach pain, and a fear of flying, Miller demonstrates that external events and other people do not cause emotional reactions. The audience is guided to recognize that how they feel is always and only created, controlled, and maintained by their own internal interpretation.
The second segment introduces the Horse and Rider model of the brain, distinguishing between the limbic system which stores learned, habitual, automatic patterns, and the neocortex which represents conscious thought and decision-making. Miller illustrates how deeply conditioned emotional and behavioral patterns resist change, why willpower alone fails, and why the program's audience participation exercises give participants direct evidence that they can force themselves to behave differently than they feel, which Miller identifies as the single most important variable in behavior change.
