About
Searching for True Love Part 1 is a Christian evangelical talk by speaker Josh, likely Josh Harris, delivered to a youth or young adult audience. The program opens with street interviews in which passersby define love in their own words, followed by the speaker's autobiography tracing a childhood of romantic idealism through a series of hollow high school relationships, leading to his conversion and a reframing of love in biblical terms. The speaker's autobiographical material includes his first junior high relationship and his later reflection that his approach to romance was fundamentally selfish.
The talk presents three biblical claims about true love drawn from John 15:13, Romans 12:9, and 1 John 3:16. The first is that true love lays down its life for others, illustrated with the story of Eric and Leslie who did not kiss until their wedding day. The second is that true love is sincere and not manipulative, illustrated with a critique of the bestselling relationship advice book The Rules. The third is that true love is fully revealed only in Jesus Christ's death on the cross, illustrated with the Helen Keller story and an extended allegorical dream called The Room, in which file cabinets containing the speaker's sins are covered over by Jesus's blood. The program closes with a worship music set.
