About
New Testament Video Presentations is an educational reference program produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints presenting cultural, historical, and doctrinal context for passages from the New Testament. The opening segment features an address by Elder Thomas S. Monson on the hope and assurance found throughout the New Testament, followed by a dramatic presentation of the Savior's encounter with the woman at the well in Samaria, drawn from John 4. Segments on Luke 4:18, 10:4, 16:24, and Matthew 23:5 explain the meaning of anointing and the Messianic title, the use of purses and scrips by traveling missionaries, and the practice of wearing phylacteries and fringed garments among the Pharisees.
Additional segments cover the synagogue as a social, educational, and religious center; the shepherd and sheepfold imagery of John 10; leprosy diagnosis and priestly examination procedures; ancient timekeeping by hours and night watches; the parable of the ten virgins and wedding feast customs; reclining posture at feasts and the meaning of lying "in the bosom"; the meaning of Gethsemane as "oil press" and its relationship to the Atonement; and Elder Jeffrey R. Holland's address on the yoke of Christ and finding rest from burdens. The transcript becomes unrecoverable after approximately 31:00, with the remainder of the tape running approximately 64 minutes beyond that point.
