About

Quality Child Care is a consumer education documentary hosted by Maria Shriver, who introduces herself as the mother of four children: Catherine, Christina, Patrick, and Christopher. The program opens with Shriver performing the Itsy Bitsy Spider rhyme with a child and addresses parents who are returning to work and navigating child care decisions. Expert commentary draws on neuroscience to explain that the first three years of life establish the biological foundation for thought, emotion, behavior, and social development, and that secure attachment to consistent caregivers literally enables brain growth. The approximately 26-minute program follows Kristen Newell, a first-time mother about to return to her job as an administrative assistant, and the Torabillo family as case studies.

The program covers three primary forms of child care: center-based care, family day care in a provider's home, and in-home care provided by a professional nanny, neighbor, or relative including grandparents. For center care, recommended adult-to-child ratios are three to four infants per adult, four to six toddlers, and six to seven preschoolers. Qualities of good caregivers are covered in detail, including genuine affection for children, understanding of developmental stages, consistency, respectful communication with children, and willingness to partner with parents. Emotional adjustment during the transition, strategies for managing separation anxiety, the role of attachment to a secondary caregiver in healthy development, and the importance of daily communication between parents and providers are addressed throughout. The program closes with advocacy for employer-sponsored child care and a call for parents to push for workplace policy changes, with commentary from a child care director noting that fifty percent of enrolled families require employer support to afford care.
