About
New York City Ballet Workout is a fitness video produced in collaboration with the New York City Ballet, presenting a version of the company's daily conditioning routine adapted for general audiences. The program is introduced by a narrator who frames the NYCB dancers as elite athletes as much as artists, and promises improvements in muscle tone, posture, and flexibility. Exercises are demonstrated by NYCB dancers and led by voice instruction throughout, with musical accompaniment.
The program is divided into four sections. The warm-up covers breathing and arm raises, demi-plies in first position through second position, roll-ups on demi-pointe, passes with turned-in leg, and a final balance sequence. The floor stretches section works through hamstring, calf, quadriceps, and lower back stretches performed lying down, followed by a floor barre sequence working the inner thighs, turnout muscles, and abdominals in prone and supine positions with the upper back exercises adding prone extensions. The standing barre section is the most technically demanding, covering demi and grand plies in first and second position, tendu front and side and back, degages, double tendus, passes to the knee with plies, and grand battement front and back. The program concludes with petit allegro beginning with roller bays and small jumps in first and second position, followed by reverence and cool-down stretches. The tape runs approximately 90 minutes.
