About
Mother Angelica Live: The Mass and Inclusive Language is an episode of the EWTN live talk program hosted by Mother Angelica, founder of the Eternal Word Television Network. The program opens with worship music and an audience participation segment before Mother Angelica addresses the theological significance of the Mass, reading from the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John and presenting a sustained argument that the Eucharist is the literal body and blood of Christ rather than a symbol. She critiques what she characterizes as the dilution of Eucharistic doctrine in contemporary Catholic practice, connecting belief in the Real Presence to faithful participation in the Mass.
The second portion of the program features a guest interview with Father John Miller, a member of the Holy Cross congregation and editor of the Social Justice Review, based in St. Louis. Father Miller is the author of The Fundamentals of Liturgy (1960) and The Signs of Transformation in Christ (1963) and taught at Notre Dame and New Orleans. The discussion focuses on whether the Mass is properly understood as a sacrifice, the controversy over inclusive language in the liturgy, and the reasons some Catholics have sought out the traditional Latin Mass. Mother Angelica closes with an update on EWTN's satellite transponder situation and thanks viewers for their financial support during a period of transition.
