About
Master Tsai's How to Protect Yourself Against Weapons opens with a short entertainment segment of fancy martial arts demonstrations before Master Tsai introduces the tape's premise: that cinematic techniques would not save a person's life in a real weapons confrontation, and that practical, simple reflexes are what matter. The program addresses three weapons: knife, gun, and club. The core concept introduced is becoming a "hard target to hit" by staying mobile, unpredictable, and never freezing up when confronted with a weapon.
Knife defenses cover redirecting a low knife attack to the throat using a palm strike, using a pen as a substitute weapon, stepping into a knife-thrust using a front kick, identifying when a person is reaching for a concealed knife, and defenses against a knife held to the neck from behind. Gun defenses cover what to do when a firearm is aimed at a distance versus pressed close, the importance of never looking at the gun barrel, dropping and grabbing the gun hand, trapping the weapon arm, and disarming while presenting a moving target. Choke and grab defenses from earlier in the series are also recapped. The program closes with demonstration by Master Tsai and assistant Kenny and a repeated reminder that practice makes perfect.
