About
Mary Hart Fit and Firm is the second exercise video produced by Mary Hart for Avon, following her Shape Up aerobics tape which People Magazine named the best exercise tape of 1989. This program is a toning video rather than an aerobic workout, designed to firm the arms, abdominals, legs, and buttocks through resistance-based exercises performed three times per week. Hart introduces the concept of resistance as the key to toning, demonstrating how muscles must actively work against imagined weight or an elastic cord rather than simply moving through air.
The workout opens with a full-body standing warm-up before moving through dedicated sections for arms (including lats, triceps, chest, and biceps), abdominals (reverse curls, obliques, and extended leg work on the floor), and legs (inner thigh, outer thigh, hamstrings, and glutes in side-lying and prone positions). A seated and standing cool-down stretch sequence closes the program. Hart closes by encouraging viewers not to quit, promising that making the workout a habit will carry the fit and firm feeling into daily life.
