About
Learn to Read with Mrs. Phipps and Snoothee is a children's phonics instruction program using a classroom setting with live-action child actors. Mrs. Phipps is the teacher; Snoothee is a five-year-old character who speaks an invented language called Guzzle, which Mrs. Phipps interprets for the other students. The program opens and closes with an alphabet song. Each letter of the alphabet is introduced in a consistent format: Mrs. Phipps presents the letter, explains both its sound variants where applicable, demonstrates correct formation of capital and lowercase versions, and leads the class through identifying words that begin with the letter.
All 26 letters are covered across the program's running time of approximately 75 minutes. The closing segment teaches sound blending, using the word "fantastic" as an example of breaking a long word into smaller phonetic units: "fan," "task," and "tick." The program frames reading as the foundation for all other learning.
