About
Las Vegas Yesterday and Today is a Tiffany Design Production documenting the history of Las Vegas Strip hotels through archival photographs, location footage, and historical narration. The program traces the city's origins from railroad magnates William Clark and E.H. Harriman platting the town in 1905 through the Bugsy Siegel era. Individual hotel histories covered include the Landmark, the Sands, the Desert Inn, the Hacienda, the Castaways (originally the Sans Souci), the Silver Slipper, the Dunes, the Royal Nevada, the Stardust, the Riviera, Circus Circus, the Frontier, and the Tropicana.
Notable details include the Sands opening December 15, 1952 with Danny Thomas as the opening act and its role as the Rat Pack's home; Liberace opening the Riviera for $50,000 per week; Howard Hughes's 1966 arrival and four-year penthouse isolation at the Desert Inn; and the Dunes' October 27, 1993 implosion. The program closes with coverage of Hoover Dam, the National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas and Mack Center, and Bonnie Springs Old Nevada, 30 miles west of Las Vegas.
