About
Las Vegas: Only in America is an International Video Network VideoVisits production offering a comprehensive history and contemporary tour of Las Vegas circa 1990. Historical segments, filmed in part at the Nevada Museum and Historical Society and the Clark County Heritage Museum, trace the city from its Paiute origins through Mormon settlement in 1855, the 1905 railroad land auction on Fremont Street, legalization of gambling in 1931, and the post-World War II resort boom beginning with El Rancho Vegas in 1941 and continuing through Bugsy Siegel's Flamingo in 1946. The director of the Las Vegas News Bureau provides on-camera historical commentary.
Contemporary coverage documents the Strip's major properties including Caesar's Palace, Circus Circus, the Tropicana, the Mirage, and Excalibur, with extended focus on Bally's showroom production Jubilee, featuring approximately 100 dancers. A showgirl originally from Kimberley, South Africa provides an interview about performing in the show. Downtown coverage includes Fremont Street gambling and neon sign production. The program closes with a promotional reel for additional International Video Network VideoVisits titles and the Reader's Digest Great National Park Series, available by calling 415-866-1121.
