About
Benchworks is an advanced step aerobics video presented by Kari Anderson, produced with members of her two clubs in Seattle, Washington, and described as a sequel to her earlier tape Moving Up. The program opens with an extended safety and technique briefing covering full body lean on the step rather than bending at the waist, flat-foot landing with heel press on the bench, toe-ball-heel roll-down on the floor return, and the use of a Dyna-Band resistance band for portions of the workout with the instruction that hand weights must not be substituted. Bench height is recommended at no more than eight inches. Anderson frames the tape as appropriate only for participants with prior step experience.
The workout runs approximately one hour and moves through progressively complex choreography including limbo steps, skip patterns, slow and fast lunges, straddle knees, and pivot and rotation sequences. Heart rate checks are taken twice during the session. A Dyna-Band upper body and resistance segment is built into the middle of the workout. The cool-down and stretch sequence uses the bench edge for heel drops, calf and Achilles lengthening, hip flexor lunges, and standing quad stretches, closing with balance work on a single leg.
