About
Jack Nicholson Reads How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin and How the Camel Got His Hump is a read-aloud adaptation of two Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling, performed by actor Jack Nicholson. The first story, How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin, follows a Parsi man living alone on a Red Sea island who bakes a large cake, only to have it stolen by a rhinoceros who tips over his stove and leaves without apology. When the rhinoceros later removes his smooth, button-fastened skin to bathe, the Parsi fills it with old cake crumbs, causing the rhinoceros to scratch so furiously against a palm tree that his skin permanently folds into wrinkles, explaining the rhinoceros's appearance and bad temper.
The second story, How the Camel Got His Hump, is set at the beginning of the world when animals were first put to work for man. A camel refuses to work, responding to every request with the word hump. A djinn summoned by the other animals confronts the camel and magically produces a hump on his back equal to the three days of work he has refused to perform, allowing him to go without eating while he catches up. Nicholson delivers both stories with theatrical character voices and pacing.
