About
Hot Yoga: The Power Yoga Method is an instructional yoga video presented by Baron Baptiste, introducing his approach to power yoga as a physically demanding practice designed to generate internal heat through breath, movement, and sustained concentration. Baptiste opens by explaining the philosophy underlying the practice: challenging the body to develop strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and present-moment awareness simultaneously, and adapting postures to individual ability while maintaining consistent effort.
The practice begins with Uttanasana standing forward fold and progresses through Ujjayi Pranayama breath instruction, explaining that the glottis contracts gently on the inhale to create a hissing sound and that this breath pattern deepens with each exhalation. Sun salutation sequences, Surya Namaskara A and B, are covered in detail, with modifications offered for practitioners who cannot yet perform chaturanga push-ups at full depth. The standing sequence includes Warrior I and Warrior II, triangle pose, extended side angle, and balance postures including Natarajasana, the dancer's pose. Seated postures include seated forward folds at multiple stages of flexibility, spinal twists, boat pose, and janusirsasana head-to-knee forward fold.
The program includes extensive instruction on the bandhas, or internal body locks: Uddiyana Bandha, the abdominal lock, and Moola Bandha, the root lock at the perineal muscles. Inversions include shoulder stand, plow pose, and fish pose. A fire-breathing pranayama sequence follows, and the practice closes with a guided final relaxation, Savasana, in which Baptiste instructs listeners to consciously release tension from every region of the body while feeling the free flow of prana, described as life force, through the solar plexus.
