About

Hot Yoga Level 3 is an Ashtanga yoga instructional video presented by Baron Baptiste. The tape label describes this as a Level 3 program, but the introduction explicitly identifies it as a beginner's practice designed to help students grow into the full primary series of Ashtanga yoga, and the instruction and pacing are consistent with an introductory to intermediate level.

Baptiste opens by explaining the four foundational principles of Ashtanga yoga: Ujjayi Pranayama, the breath drawn from the base of the throat that creates a hissing or wind-through-a-tunnel sound; the Bandhas, specifically Uddiyana Banda, the abdominal lock, and Moola Banda, the root lock at the perineal muscles; Drishtis, or gazing points, covered here in general terms only; and Vinyasa, the flowing linkage of postures through breath. He emphasizes that working all four principles together generates heat and healing energy throughout the practice.

The program proceeds through a structured Ashtanga primary series sequence including Samasthiti, Surya Namaskara A and B repeated multiple times, Padangusthasana and Hastapadasana standing forward folds, Trikonasana and Parivritta Trikonasana triangle and revolved triangle, Parsvakonasana, Prasarita Padottanasana wide-legged forward folds in four variations, Parsvottanasana, standing leg extensions and Natarajasana, Utkatasana, Warrior I and II, seated forward folds in three stages, seated spinal twists, Navasana boat pose, supine leg raises, Setu Bandha Sarvangasana bridge pose, Urdhva Dhanurasana wheel pose, Sarvangasana shoulder stand, Halasana plow pose, Karnapidasana, Matsyasana fish pose, Yoga Mudra, and Padmasana lotus. The practice closes with Savasana final relaxation and Baptiste's closing encouragement to practice three to five days weekly for gradual progressive strength and suppleness.
